My “poor” sister has to live with the fact that her older sister is a nutritionist. This means, that when her friends come over, she has to explain that the fridge is never stocked with soda, milk, and cheese, and the pantry, is without “regular” cookies, crackers and cheese doodles. Salsa con Queso, who? Nope. Not in her pantry. (once upon a time I loved this stuff, now I am just officially creeped out).
I think she has gotten pretty used to the initial “awkwardness,” and it certainly does not mean she does not still indulge in rich foods, inside and outside of the house (by the way, she actually likes my recipes). Inspired by my nutritional guidance, my fifteen year old sister set out to create this divine brownie recipe. (They must have tasted good, as they are all gone). Although it is by no means a “health” food, it certainly beats out the typical brownie recipe- which is traditionally composed of white flour, white sugar, and vegetable oils– forget the boxed variety, packed with all of those preservatives and ingredients, I cannot pronounce. Congrats little sister, you did a great job!

Are these a health food?
Folks, they are brownies.
Are they healthier? Absolutely!!
Here is my version of a fudge brownie recipe. It is a raw, nut based, creamy and delicious fudge brownie.
Oh… and my sister will tell you she does not like nuts, but she did enjoy these….
What is your favorite dessert– and how did you make it healthier?

One of my favorites is biscotti – I make it with 100% oat flour, olive oil, walnuts, and dark chocolate. Sweetened with agave and I use flax instead of eggs. Definitely delicious and not too sweet without all the excess sugar
My healthier version of a brownie has no flour at all. All you need is dates, nuts, a bit of vanilla and some unsweetened cocoa powder.
In a food processor mix a cup of nuts. I have used brazil nuts, macademia nuts and walnuts but you can mix it up and experiment. Once those are all ground up fine, add in 10 dates (no pitts). At some point at a tablespoon of the cocoa powder and a tsp of vanilla. Mix it all up until blended. Then I let it cool a bit. Once it is cooled I use a cookie scooper to scoop out little balls and put them in little paper cupcake holders. Store in the fridge.
My 2 year old son calls this cake and gobbles it up. They combine well (dried fruits with nuts) and they beat cookies in nutrional value.
