Sure. When there is a short term goal to lose a couple of pounds, it can be done with restrictive eating. Be it restrictive portions or low calorie and low fat programs, I guarantee there is a plan for you.

I am being serious. You can absolutely lose weight on a diet. And generally, that is what people think they want because we assume weight loss equates to happiness and health.

But when the side effects of restrictive calorie intake, and the consumption of artificial foods become the mainstay of your plan, a short-term, so-called “success” can turn into both a short and long-term health crisis.

So am I being a little bit facetious by titling this piece, “Diets Do Work”?

Yes.

But with good intentions. I wanted to get your attention.

This is important.

When I work with younger clientele, especially in classrooms, I usually pull out the Nutrition Label of a brand name, low fat food.

Most recently I pulled out the Nutrition Label of Fat Free ”Pringles”. With 70 calories per serving, and 0 grams of fat, many of us have been trained to consider this food “healthy”, or at least, healthier than the full fat version. But a closer look at the ingredients will indicate otherwise.

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 9.33.39 AM

The second ingredient in this “food” is olestra. What is olestra? Does it trace back to any plant or food source you know?

No. It does not. That is because Olestra is a highly processed “food” (if you can call it that) that “is processed in a special way, creating oils and shortenings that look, cook and taste like ordinary fat, but are not digested by the body. This is why it has no calories. Foods that contain olestra taste great but have fewer calories and fat than full-fat foods.”  Olean

Not digested by the body?

Special Way“?

What does that mean?

No wonder it can cause “anal leakage,” as indicated on the package.

Digestion is integral to both short-term and long-term weight loss, in addition to overall health, beauty, and wellness. Without the complete and proper digestion of our meals, our body cannot breakdown and assimilate or retrieve nutrients for health, beauty, and longevity.

I have been asked innumerable times by non-clients how long they have to “give up” fast and junk foods for. It is this mentality that has given the word “diet” such a horrible reputation. We get so caught up in what we cannot eat, we underestimate the joy of wholesome food.

The true definition of a diet is simply what we eat, not what “program” we are on to achieve weight loss. Birds do not go on a diet, yet they eat a diet of (ideally) berries, seeds, worms and insects.

A short-term and restrictive diet is not a win for anyone because it rarely focuses on REAL food. It is for this reason that people wind up reverting back to what they knew before, in addition to gaining back weight and feeling crummy. We are not meant to go on “diets.” We were created to eat foods that we can digest, and that also nourish every cell in our body, because we can properly digest them.

Digestion, as my clients know, is the amazing process of food undergoing ingestion, digestion, assimilation of nutrients, and then elimination. Here me out LOUD and CLEAR: When the body cannot digest a food, or recognize it as a useable form of calories (read: energy source), it eventually ends up storing it in the fat cells of the body, or trying to eliminate it another unpleasant way. Yes… that means that when a food reads “Diet”– it is not a “freebie”. It just means that it will make it harder for you to lose weight in the long run, and/or it could cause other unwanted side effects, like headaches, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and acne, to name just a few.

My clients know that I would much prefer them to have real food, a.k.a. the full fat guacamole, than the low-calorie popcorn, or Pringle. And they love it! Because they end up losing weight, and feeling and looking great!

Diets do work.

  • In a published study funded by the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine, 51 obese people on the Atkins Diet were studied over a course of 24 weeks. “The China Study” reported these findings of their study group: “At some point during the twenty four weeks, twenty-eight subjects (68%) reported constipation, twenty-six (63%) reported bad breath, twenty-one (51%) reported headache, four (10%) noted hair loss, and one woman (1%) reported increased menstrual bleeding.” –The China Study (pg 96).

This was after just 24 weeks.

Don’t worry… they did lose weight, despite the fact that they were smelly, constipated, and losing hair.

But lifestyle changes work better.

Wouldn’t you much rather think: “I don’t want that” than, “Sigh… I can’t have that.” ?

Check out what one of my clients recently had to say, when I asked her for her feedback for my website.

“About 2 months ago I took my first class from Lauren. Wow!! My eyes
were definitely opened. I have spent my whole life doing everything I
knew to be healthy. Nutrition has always been very important to me.
However, before meeting Lauren, I had no clue what a difference proper
digestion made!! After trying so hard for so long to see results, and
failing, I can now say I am finding my efforts successful. I feel
great! I have seen a big difference in the clarity of my skin as well.
My face and chest have really cleared up!! I feel so thankful to have
met Lauren and am so encouraged by her wealth of knowledge!!”Maddie S. Dallas, TX, Teacher, Private Alumni Event

My send off to you is, diets are not fun for you or your body. It is my experience that anyone using the phrase “on a diet” is not allowing themselves the freedom to understand what their body truly needs and desires to look and feel great. Diets do not encompass the whole package, which includes your overall health, beauty and wellness goals.

Instead, when you focus largely on foods that are whole and unprocessed, you will discover the secrets to enhanced energy, beautiful skin, an incredible metabolism and digestive system, and superior health. As each of these little changes and transformations bring you closer to your true goals, you are empowered to make happier and healthier decisions for your body.

If you are interested in improving your overall health, and becoming empowered with the knowledge you need to look and feel radiant, do email me at: Lauren@theglowdetoxdiet.com

There once was a time that I considered “indulgences” to be a form of punishment, something I did not feel entitled to enjoy. I feared the scale, counted calories religiously, micromanaged nutrients, and truly considered mainstream “diet” and fat free foods to be the key to feeling and believing I could achieve what I thought was “beautiful.”

At the end of the day, no matter how restrictive, or “indulgent” I had been, I was never better off.

Aside from the fear of weight, I could not try enough skin products, home remedies, and prescriptions to clear my skin from reoccurring blemishes.

I met with nutritionists. I met with doctors. I had tests run. I scoured the Internet. You name the game, and I played it.

Every direction I turned seemed to end in dissatisfaction—another failure.

A twist of fate led me to a renown nutritionist and holistic healer in Manhattan, who changed the way I viewed the word “healthy”, and opened my eyes to the incredibly brilliant and beautiful design of the human body.

It was as if an unforeseen path appeared, and I became exposed to an endless stream of amazing and knowledgeable people, past and present nutritional experts and healers, and ‘hidden’ texts and research all leading to the same place—A new vibrant world outside of mainstream “dieting,” energy and wellness.

You can change the way you look and feel, and it starts with what we eat.

While there will always be the disbelievers, and the folks that argue for scientific proof—the proof is in the pudding. Though every body is different, I am continually amazed by the little changes one can make in their diet, and see almost miraculous transformations beyond just their body, and complexion.

Although I have been practicing nutrition privately, and spreading my passion for health and wellness via this blog for a couple years now, at the beginning of this year, I decided to continue to do what I love on a much greater scale. Funny how things work out, eh?

Diary of a Nutritionist will still be my home for sharing my thoughts, life stories, and recipes, but I am forging ahead with my practice, and hoping to open the doors to those looking to transform their health with as much, or as little, guidance as needed.

That being said, I am excited to announce Glow– My first, truly open invitation to schedule private consultations, face-to-face, or via phone, and skype. Additionally, group lectures and events.

As you know from reading my blog, I do not believe in fads or the like, but rather gradually detoxifying (or cleansing) dietary changes, which focus on a wholesome diet of unprocessed, and plant-based foods—and plenty of room for real indulgences and fun (nothing “diet”).

Should you be ready to make the next step, I will find a transitional “lifestyle diet” that is right for your needs, and guide you on a life changing path to a more beautiful, confident you.

Side Effects of a GLOW Naturally Detoxifying Diet:

  • Discover a more youthful, and radiant complexion,
  • Eliminate acne
  • Reverse signs of aging
  • Trim fat
  • Lose weight
  • Get rid of bloating
  • Enhance your energy
  • Experience elevated moods
  • Reduce and eliminate headaches
  • Sleep better

  • Discover what I refer to as the Glowthe energy you radiate when you look and feel your very best, most beautiful self.

Like many kids and adults, I liked life sweet.

But just like any drug, my bliss and sugar high always brought me lower than I started, and yearning for more.

Of course, at a young age, we do not make this connection. As an adult, we attribute these feelings to being “normal.”

Had I fully realized the actual detriments of my diet, however, I would have saved myself a lot of trouble.

My constant insecurities were generally along the lines of stubborn baby weight, (which was more like a puffiness I never could sweat off), and later down the road, hormonal imbalances, acne, anxiety, and depression.

There were many things about my genealogy that were imperfect and contributing to my predicament, but I was never able to fully accept that DNA was the root cause for my problems, and where diet was concerned, there was not one piece of information I read that did not contradict itself. Fats, low fats, low calorie, sugar-free, exercise, pills, medications, and beauty products all seemed to be the “solution”—or never-ending solution, that is.

It was all absurd.

Regardless of whether I feasted on regular sugar, or the diet stuff, my body, moods and skin were left in a constant limbo. Neither “regular” or “diet” products contributed to my well-being, and instead: stressed hormones, left me sleepless, or exhausted, and unable to stay away from sugar without feeling like I was missing out, or depriving myself.

I had no idea that, aside from the other “food,” and processed and refined flour I was also enjoying regularly (which converts to simple sugar also), sugar was not just something that would tick off the dentist, but rather— poison me.

Sugar, refined, processed, and the diet stuff too, all leave an acid “ash” residue in the body. That is, after the body has used, or most likely– been unable to use for energy, the “waste” residue remaining lowers the body’s internal pH. When the body is “out of balance,” it invites bacteria, yeasts, and weakens the immunity. These yeasts (like Candida) which further contribute to the problem, thrive on sugars, refined foods, and foods that are not readily broken down (ground chicken tacos with cheese, etc.). These imbalances, or toxins, affect everything from our complexion, and weight, to our body’s ability to fight against aging and disease, as well as find happiness.

While I would be lying to say that the removal of sugar itself is the answer to everything (baked potatoes and rice are converted to sugar also), it can be extremely difficult to get that jump-start on a healthy “diet” without feeling deprived, or remorse for the attachment you had to some foods, when you decide to cut out the “bad”– cold turkey.

I certainly had emotional attachments to foods, and food groups, but one of my biggest issues was leaving alone the sweeter things. I liked life sweet.

And low and behold, I still do… because life is meant to be sweet.

Though I consider the best source of sugar is via carrots (juiced, or raw) and beets (juiced, grated raw, baked, or roasted), this would be like suggesting everyone use bicycles as their main mode of transportation.

Healthy,

Beneficial…

and… Unrealistic.

I get my fair share of carrots, but in between, I have to say I am still a fan of stevia. Stevia, an herbal sweetener, is very low calories and highly concentrated making it sweeter than sugar. While I would not go as far as to check it off as a “miracle food,” I do think that it is a great alternative to highly processed and chemically altered sugar, and faux-sugars. It is also extremely helpful in transitioning to a lifestyle focused on whole foods.

I must say that I am loyal to NuStevia because I know the product fairly well, and have been using it for 5 years now. While I now stray away from most powdered sweeteners, as I do not love the additives that prevent the stevia extract from caking, and such, I absolutely love the liquid versions that NuStevia has to offer (it also comes in an alcohol-free version also– I like these best!).

(With all of the brands of Stevia making it to the market, I also like that NuStevia is not owned by our dear “friends” that also happen to mass produce sodas).

Which is why I am always excited when NuNaturals asks me if I would like to hold a NuStevia giveaway.

Of course!!

Why?

I like this brand for their honesty, and taste. I also enjoy it in many of my recipes, and I want you to be able to enjoy it also.

Staying social, and living a healthy, happy life?

It is a concern I have heard come up from a number of my clients, and discussed and seen countless times over in the “health world.”

There are many avenues for this topic, for instance:

“What do I eat when I go out to a restaurant?”

“I used to order the club sandwich. What will my friends say when I ‘just order a salad’?”

“What happens when I no longer want to go out for our ritual fro yo’s or cocktails?”

“What will my friends think about me when I bring my own dressing, avocado, olive oil, salt, seasoning, etc. out with me?”

“What guy (or girl) is going to want to date a vegan/vegetarian, etc.?” (I know one.)

“What if they don’t have organic produce?”

I could go on and on… but there is one subject that I have personally discussed very recently, and this is regarding the IMPORTANCE of dining out, (or being out) with loved ones and friends (as they dine).

We undoubtedly live in a society where dining out with our companions, coworkers, partners, etc. is as natural of a bonding ritual, as calling up a friend to chat about our day. It is what we do, and for many of us… it can kill three birds with one stone: (1. bonding. 2. nourishing. 3. fun). Sorry. Those were figurative birds.

I am not, by ANY means suggesting you forfeit your beliefs to please others. Hardly. I am a vegan. I have no problem voicing that. My boyfriend knows it. My friends know it. My family knows it. While some may think it weird, peculiar, or down right crazy and “impractical,” it is, what it is.

You bring me to a steak house. I shall order a few sides of veggies. It is that easy. I am warning you now.

The point that I am trying to get at, is that sometimes it is good to experience the bonding ritual that is dining out. I do not mean eating food that is undoubtedly unhealthy, or dining out just to be dining out (or even dining out with very negative people, or ones that make you uncomfortable about your menu selections). I mean, bonding with those you truly care for, and that care for you. What concerns me most about a “very healthy or “clean” lifestyle” (read: ocd), is when we choose to stop doing the things we genuinely love, and shut out those we love, because of a food-related discomfort.

I have watched countless people become reclusive because of a fear of not fitting in at the dining table, or, even more specifically, developing a fear that the food is inorganic, or not as fresh, or will be devoid of nutrients, etc.

True. My vegetable side dish at the steak house, prior to Valentine’s Day, was a bit wilted, and I highly doubt that the produce was organic, or even as fresh as it could have been had I picked it out myself. That being said, the company was grand, the atmosphere surprisingly cheery and seductive, and the staff attentive, friendly and excellent. There would have been a time where I would have been put off by the few “harder to digest” seeds sprinkled about my salad, or questioned, and then become stressed, about the oil used on any, if not all of my dishes. There may have also been a brief period of time where I simply did not want to dine out. Period.

Yes, it would have been “simpler” had I just stayed in and eaten from the safe haven of my home. But…

I would have unquestionably missed out on the fun experience that I got to share with someone who cares for me, just as much as I care for them.

Wilted green beans, or not. Digestion was not at the forefront of my mind, nor was their relatively shallow nutrient count of my steamed vegetable platter. Why?

Good company can make good food more enjoyable, relaxing, satiating, comforting, and yes… sometimes, even more digestible.

To put this in another perspective; an overly anxious, or worrisome person may find little joy, and much indigestion from an organic, fresh, and perfectly prepared meal.

If father daughter dinner dates were something that you used to thoroughly enjoy, but stopped because of a fear of inadequate veggie preparation, do something about it. My sister works at a less than mediocre pizza shop in our hometown (sorry, b. You are terrific). My dad, living a distance away from where we grew up, likes to visit her there. I enjoyed, joining. While the greens were HARDLY organic, and the sun-dried tomatoes a bit to red and perky (to be natural), I had no problem putting away a giant “Italian Inspired” mixed green salad, and finishing it off with a giant plate of garlic steamed broccoli (and I mean, GIANT plate). I brought my own olive oil, and sometimes a bottle of wine.

No harm. No fowl.

Those were dates I looked forward to. We got to visit my sister, and I got to visit with my dad.

In the grand scheme of things: Stay true to your beliefs. Fuel your body with nutrient rich foods… But don’t let the minute details ostracize you from the people you love (and there are always plenty of other things you can do to bond, of course… walks, scrabble games).

Friends and family that are loving, are not judging (just don’t confuse one’s genuine concern, for judgement).

When it comes to food, do what makes you and your mind, body and soul happy. As humans, we naturally want to belong, socialize, and feel a part of something. A big part of our happiness can come positive social interaction, be it from companionship with friends, family, and/or significant others.

In our society, much of these relationships can begin over a meal, and/or a cocktail.

So…

Bond! I am not talking about grabbing a donut(s) with mom, as that is not a treat, but rather a sugary trick, or feeling pressure to drink an alcoholic beverage. I am talking about enjoying the company of others. If that happens to be at a table with food, by all means, go! Don’t be bashful. It is entirely possible to be healthy and social (and if you are concerned, bring snacks!).

While I have little desire for nights out during the work week, and cocktail hour is not something that strikes my fancy much (as I am rising early, and working at night when I can), when given the time, dining, (and wining) out with great company is something I enjoy 100%!

After posting 12 Tips for Managing Anxiety (and depression) Naturally, I heard from a number of readers happy to share their story, and offer suggestions. Thank you! It was so nice to hear your suggestions and thoughts on the topic.

Here is a recap from last week’s post:

Things that can cause and/or worsen Anxiety:

  1. Candida
  2. Soy
  3. Dairy
  4. Alcohol
  5. The Pill
  6. Caffeine
  7. A diet rich in processed foods, additives, and animal products will lead to an increased level of acidity in the body, and therefore disease, not excluding anxiety and depression.

After some thought though, I wanted to point out that there are a few other important things to look out for if you suffer from anxiety, nervousness, jitters, and/or depression.

  • What are you supplementing with? I cannot say that I agree with much of what the FDA regulates in terms of the packaged foods and beverages that make their way onto the shelves of our grocers, but I will point out that “dietary supplements do not need approval from FDA before they are marketed (FDA).” That being said, it can be very easy to fall into the traps of purchasing every supplement under the sun. Natural or not, it is very important to check with your nutritionist, or health coach to decide if supplements are suitable for you, and, if so, what supplements, and what brands to buy. Unless we have a specific need, we do not need many supplements (if any at all). Additionally, supplements that contain “natural energy” can lead to a restless, and jittery feeling. Be cautious of taking vitamin B12 supplements, especially ones that are not plant based. I would only recommend taking plant supplements, in general. I like
  • Diet Pills (and Energy Drinks) Ah!  Tempting as they may be, many work by increasing your heart rate. Not only are these pills (drinks) dangerous, but they can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and other unwanted side effects. YIKES! Get energy the NATURAL way… through a proper and nutrient dense diet.
  • Chocolate. As delicious as chocolate may be, (and I only suggest enjoying “natural” and/or preferably organic dark chocolates when available) it also contains theobromine. Theobromine stimulates the central nervous system, much like caffeine. Although it is a more mild stimulant, people sensitive to any stimulant, and a history of nervousness should avoid (or decrease) chocolate consumption, especially at bed time.
  • Tea. Some tea has a lot of caffeine too.
  • Especially avoid stimulants in the hotter weather, as higher temperatures are more likely to increase heart rates, etc., and can “play” with an overactive mind.
  • Sugar, with the exception of natural sugars found in raw honey, fruits, and vegetables (which should be consumed in moderation), sugar spikes blood sugar levels up and down, upsetting glucose and energy levels, and stimulating the brain’s “feel good” receptors temporarily. Too much sugar can send someone sky high (overstimulating the brain), and then crashing down a few hours later.  A quick change in glucose levels, and/or “sugar withdrawal” can leave someone with the unsettling feeling of the “jitters” leading to hyperactivity, increased heart rate, and anxiety (or nervousness).
  • Bronchodilators, (like asthma medications), can also increase anxiety, dilating the bronchioles, and increasing heart rate.

In addition to incorporating these tactics into your daily regimens (from last weeks post)…

  1. Therapy
  2. Exercise
  3. Diet and Food Combining
  4. Sleep

Another healthy suggestion for managing anxiety comes from Laura B.. She suggests 20 minutes of Meditation in the morning and evening. If ever I am stressed, I close my eyes and think of something I am looking forward to, or something that I am grateful for… then I breathe. ;)

Breathe in… Breathe out…

How do you combat stress? Did you find this article helpful? What are your anti-anxiety tips? Would love to hear your comments!
