MILK SERIES:  PART FOUR

If you enjoy an acid lifestyle, which may consist of an over consumption of alcohol, acid-forming foods, and too much stress (whether it be from overwork, not enough sleep, or negative relationships), your pH will more than likely be in the “red” on the pH scale.

What does an “acid” or “red” pH reading mean?

As discussed in “Are you Acid or Alkaline?”, a pH below 7.0 is an indication of an acid body.  When the body is more acid than alkaline, it means that the body can no longer keep up with the consumption of acid foods, stressors and toxins, and it is not able to cleanse the blood of the acid “consumed”. An acid body invites disease and sickness. (i.e. Have you ever noticed that you will generally get sick after too many late nights, prolonged stress, and eating foods– that you might not normally “indulge” in?)

If someone has a very acid lifestyle but finds themselves with a very alkaline reading (let’s say, 7.8), this can indicate that the body is using its own defense mechanism to correct the issue.  Good, right?  Not exactly.  When there is an overabundance of acid in the blood, the body will attempt to purge the blood by leaching alkaline minerals (like calcium) directly from the bones, tissues and teeth. It is the body’s “SAVE ME” attempt, to correct what is wrong in the body.  Your bones, tissues and teeth need those minerals– when they are depleted… bring on the osteoporosis!

“It is estimated that 1 out of every 2 women over the age of 50 will be affected by osteoporosis in her remaining lifetime.”

Pasteurized, homogenized milk (and dairy) is HIGHLY acid-forming. Consuming milk and dairy products creates acid in the body and lowers, I repeat, LOWERS, pH.

If the average family consumes roughly two gallons of milk each week, that is about 104 gallons of milk, per year, per family.  If the average family consumes 104 gallons of milk each year, and milk builds strong bones, why is it that “10 million individuals already have osteoporosis, and 34 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for this disease” ? Osteo Stats.

Something obviously does not add up there.

A beautiful relative of mine was diagnosed with osteoporosis in the past year.  She has been a strict vegetarian for years, and her doctor informed her that she had to add meat back into her diet immediately.  I disagree with this advice entirely.  In fact, her diet was heavy in dairy products– cheeses, and other acid-forming foods, such as breads, pasta, crackers, wine…

It is my own educated opinion (and other trained holistic healers), that adding in animal products, for the sake of decreasing the risk of bone deterioration and bone fragility, will not alleviate or remedy the real problem*.  In fact, in order to reverse or halt bone loss, I would suggest that  a great start would be to eliminate dairy products and focus on alkaline-forming foods.

*Aside from acidity, menopause also plays a role in osteoporosis.  During menopause, estrogen levels plummet, and thus encourages bone loss.

In order to decrease the amount of acid in the blood, and in turn, decrease the likelihood of illness, including the probability of osteoporosis, it is crucial to focus on enjoying a diet high in alkaline-forming foods and low in acid-forming.  I am not suggesting you entirely eliminate acid-forming foods from the diet, cold-turkey.  But aim to drastically decrease the foods in the “red” and “pink” (chart below).

So… you are out to dinner (or having dinner) and want to have a glass or two of wine (or something highly acid-forming)…

If you are dining out and would like to enjoy a glass of wine (highly-acid forming), enjoy a salad (with olive oil and lemon as the dressing), instead of the shrimp cocktail, crab bisque or bruschetta. If you are a vegetarian, try a platter of grilled vegetables, sprinkled with a touch of cheese, as an entree- instead of the pasta dish.  If you would like to enjoy a meat entree, ask that it be grilled, and not fried.  Then, instead of ordering a side of potatoes, fries, or rice… opt for the side salad and/or a side of vegetables. Almost all restaurants can substitute vegetables for their suggested side of couscous or a baked potato.  Menus are not set in stone. You are the customer… don’t be afraid to request a healthier alternative than what they suggest. Oh… and try to refrain from digging into that bread basket– instead focus your attention on your company, beverage and/or salad.  The bread in that basket is addicting, and highly-acid forming– not to mention, one bite always turns into 5 rolls (if you’re in my family, anyway).

Sipping on hot water with freshly squeezed lemon would be another way to divert your attention and help with digestion.

Osteoporosis?  You have the control.

I have never been one of those people that enjoyed squirting lemon juice over my fish.  It has always weirded me out.

I do love lemons, however, as they are wonderful for cleansing the body.

Why I love lemons.

  • Drinking a warm cup of water with fresh squeezed lemon, 20-30 minutes prior to a meal, helps to stimulate gastric juices and thus aids in digestion.
  • Lemons help to detox the liver by helping in the metabolism of fat.
  • Lemons contain high levels of Vitamin C and potassium.
  • Juicing whole lemons are fantastic, as the rind and pulp contain a lot of minerals, such as:  calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
  • Lemons are alkaline-forming.

Feeling bloated after your morning coffee? You may be surprised to know that coffee is very acidic.  Lemons may taste acidic, but in fact, lemons are very alkalizing.  What does this mean?

A food may be acidic to the taste, but when foods are metabolized in the body, they either leave off an alkaline or acid residue in the body (more specifically, the urine).

Yes, I am back at it again.  But this is just to show how important it is to have a pH balanced diet and life. Recap: We want our pH level to be in the 6.8 to 7.2 range.  Therefore we want to be more alkaline than acidic.  If we are alkaline, disease cannot live in the body.

Acidic beverages, like coffee and non-herbal teas can cause indigestion, bloat, etc.   Coffee can also be responsible for burning your esophagus.  Eek.

Need a morning burst of energy but want to avoid the coffee?

Grab a to-go cup and squeeze in a decently sized lemon wedge (fresh).  Leave the rind in the mug.

1 tbsp of RAW Honey (make sure it is raw.  Not for people with allergies to pollen or bees).

Fill with hot water and go!

The raw honey will provide you with energy and the lemon will cleanse and alkalize.  This is wonderful for digestion.

Feeling chilly and want to enjoy a very alkaline-forming soup? Try this creamy (sans “the cream”) raw carrot soup at Lettuce Love.  The majority of the ingredients are extremely alkalizing and carrots, ginger, and avocados are warming in the body (they product heat).

Oh!  And do not forget to enter in the NuNaturals giveaway for your very own Alcohol Free Vanilla NuStevia and box of NuNaturals NuStevia powder packets.  All you need to do is tell me what creative recipe you would make with it.  The amazing folks at NuNaturals have offered to award (4) of my readers this NuStevia package.  Sweet!  (Contest ends on Monday the 11th at midnight).  Enter now!!

Do you know your pH?

All organic matter on our planet has a pH level and yes, that includes us!!  A pH level of 7.0 is neutral, which means that anything below 7.0 is considered acid, and anything above is alkaline.  Neutral is a wonderful thing, in this case.

battery acid is a dangerous 1.0 on the pH scale... stay away!

pH is the acronym for “potential of Hydrogen.”  Basically, your pH level determines your personal acid to alkaline ratio.

Human blood is slightly alkaline at around 7.40.  It is important to strive for balance, as we do not want to be too acid or too alkaline.  (Being too alkaline is less common).

Why do we want a balanced or neutral, pH? In the simplest of terms, if our bodies are too acid, it means that their is an accumulation of acidic waste in our cells, human tissue, organs, glands, etc… This, of course, is not a good thing.

Acid is a host for bacteria and invites disease into the body.  A neutral or slightly alkaline body cannot be a host for disease.  Thus, why we must strive for balance.

How can we create this balance?  There are many factors that influence our pH levels in the body.  Having a poor diet and too much stress will cause a dangerous imbalance.  (It is easy to test your pH balance with litmus paper.  For now though, you will be able to determine your pH just by analyzing the foods you eat on an everyday basis- use the chart below).

Below is a rather rough diagram to help you determine whether your diet is alkaline or acid.

Here is the wonderful news:  You can control your pH. Without getting caught up, or stressing about whether certain foods are, or are not, acid, you can make a drastic improvement in your diet by taking these few steps:

  • Decrease (or eliminate) consumption of sodas, coffee, non-herb tea, candy, chocolate, milk, animal protein, cheese, starch and alcohol.
  • Always buy organic, non-homogenized, milk.
  • Choose a raw goat cheese from a trusted source, instead of pasteurized cow milk cheese.
  • Avoid processed snacks and fried foods.
  • Order the grilled chicken or fish with a side of vegetables instead of the fried chicken with fries.
  • Snack on raw nuts (like almonds) and seeds (like sunflower or pumpkin) instead of peanuts, candy or protein bars.
  • Concentrate on eating more vegetables, green things, fruit, and high-quality grain, and sprouted-grain products (like Kamut pasta or Ezekiel brand bread).
  • Make your own salad dressings from first-cold pressed olive oil, instead of buying the pre-made stuff that contains hidden sugars and bad oils like, soybean oil.
  • Use Stevia and raw honey in place of sugar and artificial sweeteners.
  • Use organic butter instead of margarine and sea salt instead of iodized table salt.
  • Add avocado to your sandwich instead of mayonnaise.
  • If you are going to enjoy wine at dinner, load up on the vegetables.

For beginners, it is all about creating balance.  I am not saying that you need to give up your red meat, wine and chocolate.

There are a million and one ways you can improve your pH level and thus, health and still enjoy life.  How do you strive to maintain a healthy balance?  What “acid”-forming foods have you traded in for a more alkaline alternative.

  • I did not mention it on my diagram, but Carob (alkaline) is a wonderful substitute for Cocoa (acid).  In my opinion it hardly tastes like cocoa but sweetened with NuNaturals brand Stevia, I am enjoying it.
