You love it.

You hate it.

You hate to love it.

You love to hate it.

Or… you simply just try to avoid it when out on a hot date.

Not me.  I unabashedly adore garlic, sorry boyfriend…

Not only does garlic add character, and spicy complexity to the dullest of dishes, but Garlic is also considered one of Mother Nature’s most potent antibiotic, and antifungal.

Garlic’s potent odor comes from sulfur gas, and it has been used for centuries for medicinal reasons, as well as to ward off evil spirits (or unsuspecting strangers).

Sulfur has been shown to promote the elimination of toxins from the blood, lymph, and body. According to Haas*, studies have directly compared the antimicrobial effects of garlic to prescription medications like: penicillin, streptomycin, and erythromycin, and tetracycline, discovering it to be just as effective in killing bacteria (in large doses, of course).

Unlike the vast majority of prescriptive medications that can create an imbalance in the body, (by killing off the good bacteria, in addition to the bad bacteria), garlic has been shown to kill off the bad guys, while leaving the good guys alone.  This allows the healthy intestinal bacteria (a.k.a. probiotics) to flourish, symbiotically.

Because garlic leaves the body’s healthy bacteria and yeasts unharmed, it is also one of the ideal “antibiotics” for treating microbes like Candida albicans, jock itch, Herpes Simplex, and other common viruses that lead us down the trail to “common cold” central, which are often resistant to common prescriptive medications (because they require healthy bacteria to prevent them from coming back).

Candida especially, is very common in women, and results from an imbalance of healthy bacteria and probiotics to keep toxics yeasts and bacteria at bay.

Of course, the majority of us, will not use enough garlic to experience an overwhelming amount of nutritional benefits from it, but you can start out small… toss raw garlic into your salads, vegetables dishes, or if you are really feeling ballsy, your fresh vegetable juice.

Spin the bottle, anyone?

Have you been feeling achey?  Congested?  Do you have a sinus headache?  Is your throat scratchy?  Do you feel like you are running on low energy? Do you feel, heavy, and just exhausted?  Is stress effecting you more than usual?  Do you feel, “hungover” (but you’re actually not)?

Being “sick” is just your body’s way of “cleansing” itself of the germs.  It is your body’s way of saying… “hello!  something is wrong here! We need to get back in balance.”  It is not saying, “take a cold suppressant.”

But that is beside the point, because being sick stinks.

I have seen countless sneezing, watery-eyed, individuals, as of late.  Those that aren’t wearing their tissue box, around their neck, are talking about Sally, or Joey, or Mary, or Larry, that is under the weather.  While a healthy diet, and ample sleep, are crucial to any healthy lifestyle, these few tips can really help you get better, quicker.

Helpful Supplements!

Oil of Oregano*- potent antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, and anti-viral.  It also aids in digestion.  *Do not use if pregnant.

Probiotics- friendly bacteria, that aid in digestion.  If the digestive system is not properly functioning, the body becomes more prone to allergies, skin nuances, and the immunity is weakened.   Pharmaceutical medication kill the bad bacteria, but it also kills the good bacteria.  Bad bacteria are like weeds, in that they keep coming back.  Without an ample supply of the good bacteria, the weeds can get out of control.  Look for probiotics that contain at least 10 billion LIVE bacteria.

Coconut Oil – Contains medium-chained fatty acids that fight fungus in the digestive tract.  Caprylic acid is also available in the form of a capsule– it is a potent supplement.

Wheatgrass- one of the most alkaline foods you can consume.  An acid lifestyle, invites disease.  An alkaline lifestyle, invites harmony.  If the body is alkaline, the bad guys (bacteria, fungus, bad yeasts, parasites, etc), cannot flourish.  Don’t overdo it with the wheatgrass– this stuff is strong, and will encourage detoxification in the body.

Eat garlic (and don’t apologize to your significant other)… It is a potent antibiotic– and known as Russian penicillin!  And Ginger is wonderful for digestion too!
